Synopsis

Since 2008, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg and the Faculty of Law at Kyoto University have been engaged in an institutionalized partnership with the aim of promoting regular academic exchange, particularly among young researchers, and intensive project-based collaboration. As part of this cooperative effort, the two partners conducted a joint research project titled “Private Autonomy and Personal Responsibility as Legal Principles in German-Japanese Comparative Law” from 2016 to 2018. The project concluded in early 2018 with a workshop in Kyoto, the contributions of which are published in this volume.
